Fresh Food Suppliers Join Forces with SPAR for Innovation Day in North England

In a dynamic gathering at the SPAR Distribution Centre in Bowland View, Preston, over 20 of SPAR North of England's fresh food suppliers united for a day dedicated to innovation, networking, and strategic updates.

Hosted by James Hall & Co. Ltd., the event aimed to strengthen relationships and explore new opportunities within the fresh food sector.

The session featured a range of activities designed to spark creativity and collaboration. Suppliers exchanged ideas on emerging trends, discussed new product lines, and explored merchandising concepts currently being trialled in SPAR stores. These discussions were complemented by insights into the latest sector trends and innovative deals, all with the goal of enhancing the fresh food offerings available to customers across the North of England.

Attendees were also briefed on the latest seasonal ranges being rolled out in SPAR stores, which have already shown a significant positive impact on sales. A key highlight was the success of linking fresh produce to inspirational recipes, a strategy that has proven to boost customer engagement and sales at the till.

In addition to the brainstorming sessions, participants were treated to a tour of the warehouse. They also received updates on recent store developments within James Hall & Co. Ltd's G&E Murgatroyd company-owned SPAR estate and independent SPAR retailers, showcasing the ongoing efforts to improve and innovate within the store network.

Wilf Whittle, Fresh Trading Manager at James Hall & Co. Ltd., expressed his enthusiasm for the event: "I've been eager to host a day like this for our valued fresh food suppliers ever since the pandemic. It’s not just a way to thank them for their unwavering support during challenging times, but also an opportunity to align our vision and strategies as we move forward together."

The event brought together a diverse group of suppliers, from those who have worked with James Hall & Co. Ltd. for decades, to new growers whose produce was being introduced to SPAR stores that very week.

Steven Kay, Commercial Director of Huntapac Produce Ltd., shared his long-standing connection with the company: "We’ve been supplying James Hall & Co. Ltd. with carrots, parsnips, and swedes for 35 years. Working with Wilf and his team is always a pleasure; their business approach aligns closely with ours."

Meanwhile, newer suppliers, like Chris Johnson of Red Rose Salads Ltd., expressed optimism about their budding partnership: "We’re excited to launch SPAR-labelled beetroot into stores. It’s a brand-new relationship with James Hall & Co. Ltd., and we’re looking forward to its growth."

Holly Ball, Commercial Director at Flavourfresh Salads Ltd., echoed this sentiment, noting her company's ongoing relationship: "Although I’m new to my role, our business has been supplying SPAR North of England with tomatoes, salads, and chillies for several years, and we’re excited to continue this partnership."

Philip Dodd, Managing Director of Herbs Unlimited, reflected on his company's recent entry into the retail market: "It was great to be invited alongside fellow growers. Our fresh herbs made their debut in SPAR North of England stores in January, marking our first venture into retail, and we’re thrilled with how it’s progressing."

This collaborative day underscores the commitment of SPAR North of England and its suppliers to continually innovate and deliver fresh, high-quality produce to customers, ensuring that SPAR stores remain a destination for fresh food in the region.
