In a significant leadership change, John Walgate has been named the new CEO of British Growers, set to officially step into the role at the beginning of September 2024.
Walgate will succeed Jack Ward, who will continue to serve as a main Board director while maintaining his industry representation responsibilities on a part-time basis. Over the coming months, Ward will work closely with Walgate to ensure a smooth transition.
Jason Burgess, Chairman of British Growers, praised Walgate's appointment, saying, "We had an impressive list of people come forward for the role, but the combination of John's finance background coupled with his experience of running businesses at a CEO level made him the standout candidate to take the organisation forward. And we are delighted he will be taking up the post at the start of September."
Walgate brings a wealth of experience to the role, having launched his professional career with the accountancy firm Grant Thornton. Over the past 25 years, he has held senior-level positions in the pet food sector, successfully leading several businesses. His extensive background in finance and executive leadership, combined with his experience as chair of the representative organisation for the Pet Food industry, positions him well to steer British Growers towards continued success.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the new role, Walgate stated, "I am delighted to be joining British Growers and continuing the excellent work of Jack and the team. It's a great time to be joining the horticultural industry and I look forward to helping support the future growth of British producers."
Outside of his professional life, Walgate is an avid sports enthusiast and enjoys cultivating his own vegetables and fruit at his allotment on the outskirts of Lincoln.
This leadership transition marks an exciting new chapter for British Growers, as the organisation looks to build on its successes and further support the growth of the UK’s horticultural industry under Walgate's guidance.
