Tesco to Cut 400 Jobs in Drive for Greater Efficiency

Tesco, Britain’s largest supermarket chain, has announced plans to cut around 400 jobs across its stores and head office as part of an efficiency drive aimed at reinvesting in the business.

The decision follows a similar move by Sainsbury’s, the UK’s second-largest grocer, which revealed last week that it would be reducing its workforce by over 3,000 roles.

Like many major employers, Tesco is facing rising costs this year following an increase in employer social security payments and the national minimum wage under the new Labour government’s first budget in October.

A Tesco spokesperson confirmed that staff have already been informed about proposed changes, which include restructuring bakery operations in some stores and updating management roles in Tesco Mobile shops.

"Taken together, the changes we are proposing mean that around 400 roles will be removed," the company said in a statement.

However, Tesco is aiming to minimise redundancies by offering affected employees alternative positions, with around 1,000 vacancies currently available across the business.
